UIRA UPDATE NO 22. The New Zealand Graphic November 21 1896. "Her deck fittings, including cockpit, coamings, skylight frame, etc, are of teak." As we put the tools away for the summer break, UIRA'S forward hatch and butterfly hatch now sit perfectly in her sweet sheer with just the cockpit and very special companionway hatch to finish. Stern capping rail has been added and ready for final shaping. Matt, Iefke and Jeremy have loved working with such beautiful timber and it shows in the results. Enjoy! 😊

UIRA UPDATE NO 21. Wonderful to back at the shed after a winter away! UIRA is looking amazing and Team UIRA have been very busy! Deck has had it's first sanding with the toe rails painted, capping added and shaped! ( Just the stern piece of teak to be added) Hull fairing and splining have begun with all the arm and shoulder pain that is involved. Jeremy has been making the mould for the bow fitting that will sent to the foundry be cast in bronze. Matt has begun mocking up the centre hatch making sure it sits nicely with the sheerline. Many thanks again to Iefke Van Gogh for the fabulous photos!

UIRA UPDATE NO 20. A TOUCH OF GREEN AND A NEW KEEL. AND BOAT BUILDING 101! UIRA lost her original lead keel to bullets during WW2 but the hull survived due to her then owner Charles Marshall. Charles Marshall's love affair with UIRA lasted 40 years and only relinquish ownership on his death on the 3nd of April 1953. When rediscovered in 2018 UIRA was still fitting with the keel made of steel punching's from Marshall's manufacturing company and concrete! To recreate a new lead keel as close as possible to the original we took into account the shape of the existing concrete keel and reports from newspapers at the time of her launching that stated that UIRA had a short length of bulb keel between 4 and 5 tons. Taking all this into account and the weight of UIRA'S hull at 3.6 tons, add into the calculation her waterline length of 30ft and draft of 7ft and a ballast ratio between 60 to 65% a keel of 4.3 tons should do the job! Calculations done, now just create a plug to create a mould in which to pour 4.3 tons of moulted lead! Ganz einfach! 😊 Jeremy, Matt, Iefke and Andrew have also been busy with the teak deck seems now sealed and ready for sanding, the toe rail is in place and painted ready for the teak capping. Big thanks to Iefke Van Gogh for the recording the progress through her wonderful photographs and thanks also Martin Clowes!

UIRA UPDATE NO 19. Part 2. New Teak Sprung Deck! Matt and Iefke with Jeremy guidance have been working tirelessly for the last month to create UIRA'S new teak deck! This is a sprung deck that follows the outer curve of the hull and is particularly tricky to lay without any mechanical fasteners! Again big thanks to Iefke for the wonderful pictures!

UIRA UPDATE NO 19. Part 1. There has been a number of milestones during UIRA'S restoration that a wee celebration has been in order! We have reached one of these milestones! A big Thank to our multi talented member of Team Te Uira, Iefke Morris for capturing the progress! To celebrate the occasion we created a little video, as befits a video made by boatbuilders it's not super polished but hopefully it's a start! 🥳 More to come in part 2!
