TE UIRA UPDATE NO 25. RUDDERLESS NO LONGER AND A BIG BIRDSMOUTH SPAR. As we emerge from a cold and wet winter, Team TE UIRA has been busy with creating her new rudder and mast. When Charles Marshall had to remove TE UIRA'S lead keel and donate the lead to the war effort in the early 1940's along with creating a new iron keel a new rudder was also constructed. Unbeknownst to us Marshall had used one of the original pintle and gudgeon in the construction of his new rudder, so when the 1940's rudder was dismantle much to our surprise and delight buried in filler and bog was one pair of the original bronze pintle and gudgeon. With master shipwright Lindsay Wood charged with creating a new rudder it was possible for him to recreate the missing bronze rudder parts and use the original pintle and gudgeon to cast more! Meanwhile Team TE UIRA have begun the huge task of creating UIRA'S 50ft Pole Mast from Sitka Spruce and using the birdsmouth construction method. No mean feat considering the length of the timber used to create such a large timber spar! As usual I'll let Iefke Van Gogh's wonderful photographs tell the rest of the story.
