UIRA UPDATE NO 26. A CURVY COCKPIT, A GRACEFUL HATCHWAY, BRONZE CRANSE & GAMMON IRON, A SAMSON POST, SPRUCE BOWSPRIT, PATTERNS FOR CATHEADS AND CHAIN PLATES, JUST ADD ENDLESS HULL FAIRING AND GALLONS OF VARNISH AND THAT BAILEY SCROLL! With the Australian Wooden Boat Festival fast approaching it's been a crazy busy time at the shed amplified by four year since the last festival in 2019. With so much going on and the recreation of so many components needed for a respectable Victorian Racing Yacht it has been difficult to take in all the activities, so I'll allow the photos to do the talking! P.S. CWB can not express enough our thanks to Wayne Olsen of Horizon Boats for sending over the ditch some of the his beautiful patterns made during the restoration of the UIRA'S older sibling the 1895 C&W Bailey 5 Rater IDA!

TE UIRA UPDATE NO 25. RUDDERLESS NO LONGER AND A BIG BIRDSMOUTH SPAR. As we emerge from a cold and wet winter, Team TE UIRA has been busy with creating her new rudder and mast. When Charles Marshall had to remove TE UIRA'S lead keel and donate the lead to the war effort in the early 1940's along with creating a new iron keel a new rudder was also constructed. Unbeknownst to us Marshall had used one of the original pintle and gudgeon in the construction of his new rudder, so when the 1940's rudder was dismantle much to our surprise and delight buried in filler and bog was one pair of the original bronze pintle and gudgeon. With master shipwright Lindsay Wood charged with creating a new rudder it was possible for him to recreate the missing bronze rudder parts and use the original pintle and gudgeon to cast more! Meanwhile Team TE UIRA have begun the huge task of creating UIRA'S 50ft Pole Mast from Sitka Spruce and using the birdsmouth construction method. No mean feat considering the length of the timber used to create such a large timber spar! As usual I'll let Iefke Van Gogh's wonderful photographs tell the rest of the story.

LOOKING BACK. January 2018 we held the launch of two charming, Mrs Wilsons Rowing Dinghys! "Presenting the Mrs Wilsons Rowing Dingys ISABELLA and POOLTAH. (Seahorse) Designed by Walter Paisley in 1872 and built by Alison Pit and Jurgen Harder at Cygnet Wooden Boats under the supervision of Jeremy Clowes. Launched at Robleys Point Port Cygnet January 2018." Some history with thanks to the Tasmanian Maritime Museum: "John Wilson married Dinah Goodby in 1872 and soon presented her with this dinghy. Every Monday and Friday during their married life Dinah would row the 10 km between Cygnet and her husband's workplace at Esperance. She was still rowing it 65 years later aged 88. Mr Wilson had the dinghy built by ex convict Walter Paisley who was a youngster at Point Puer. He received a pardon in 1847 but remained a probationer for 15 years."

UIRA UPDATE NO 24. HULL SHEATHING, BIG BOLTS AND ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL RUDDER! It's been awhile since the last update so lots to catch up on! After what seemed to be endless timber plugs, splines and fairing of the hull we began the difficult task of applying a layer of dynal sheathing to the hull. The question is often asked why sheath a perfect wooden hull? Firstly the triple diagonal construction of TE UIRA is incredible strong and stable but the multiple layers of planking can be a complete nightmare if a leak develops with water tracking along the inner layers and appearing on the inside far from the external incursion. Secondly maintenance and its increasing cost. We are hopeful that TE UIRA will be extant for another 100 years and the coating will help decrease the cost of her maintenance now and in the future! As a racing boat UIRA may one day compete with her contemporaries in New Zealand that have also been restored this way. Keeping the water from the timbers keeps her lighter and faster on the water! After the sheathing we added a lick of paint so we can start the final fairing of the hull ready for sanding and painting. The next huge job has been drilling through metres of keel timber and lead to insert the new keel bolts. While it was tempting to use spiral drills for the lead with over a metre of material to drill through it was considered not worth the angst of the drill bit binding and breaking in the lead, so a more robust but slower type of drill bit was used! The drilling team of Andrew, Matt, Marshall, Jeremy and Taylor drilled through a combined total of 6 metres of lead ballast. A big thanks to our engineer Edd who made all the bolts, nuts, drills and counter bores to accomplish the task! With the ballast keel now bolted in place what a big beautiful boat needs is a big beautiful rudder and all the parts to attach it to the boat! Lindsay has been busy constructing said rudder from slabs of glorious New Zealand Kauri and making patterns for the pintles and gudgeons to attach the rudder that now have been cast in gun metal bronze ready for fitting! Lastly her new feathering propeller has arrived so we can prepare the rudder aperture to accommodate the new prop. Enough said for now, I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story! Enjoy!

UIRA UPDATE NO 23. PLUGS, SPLINES, FAIRING, AND WOOHOO 4.3 TONS OF NEW LEAD KEEL! Not all wooden boat building is glamorous, plugging up hundreds of nail holes and splining meters of planking and then fairing it all is shoulder breaking work! So that's why they called them "Lead Mines"! As mentioned earlier TE UIRA lost her lead keel to WW2 and so a new lead keel needed to be cast. There was much excitement when the new one arrived and moved carefully under UIRA! Now the difficult job of drilling through almost a metre of lead and keel timber to attach the 6 Aluminium Bronze keel bolts that will hold the 4.3 ton keel to the boat.

With thanks to the Classic Yacht Charitably Trust of New Zealand for the picture of Charles Bailey Jun's yacht ROGUE ready for relaunching after a stunning restoration taking many years to complete. "The 1892 Bailey built Rogue having her mast restepped after a major refit. A beautiful addition to New Zealand's active fleet of classic vessels. Next step is to refloat her tomorrow to confirm her waterline before completing the antifouling."
