ᗩᑎᗪ TᕼEY ᔕᗩIᗪ, "IT ᗯOᑌᒪᗪ ᑎEᐯEᖇ ᗯOᖇK!" After successfully returning TE UIRA to the water in February of this year, we finally got to see if her new 25hp Beta Diesel Engine driving a Hydralign feathering propellor through her complex Optibelt drive system would propel her at a exceptable speed through the water. It was hearts in mouths as we set off down the Cygnet River with M.V ADELA in hot pursuit just in case.

MISTRAL III UPDATE NO.1 Cygnet Wooden Boats would like to welcome the Sparkman and Stephens designed yacht MISTRAL III to the shed. Built by Wilson Bros of Port Cygnet of Huon Pine for Guy Rex a prominent businessman and keen yachtsman of Hobart. On boxing day 1938, MISTRAL III was towed by the Motor Launch WAYAREE during a gale to Battery Point in Hobart, there to be fitted out at the Purdon & Featherstone Yard and subsequently launched in 1939. Designed by Olin Stephens as a cruiser/ racer and penned in 1935. S&S design No. 97. In 1939 Guy Rex had MISTRAL III lengthened by 1ft 6", making her overall length 32ft. This modification allowed for the removal of the bumpkin and was said to create a more pleasing stern. 1945 Guy Rex sold MISTRAL III to Messrs Lording and Brown of the Royal Victorian Yacht Club of Melbourne. In 1960 MISTRAL III was purchased by M.C Dowd of the Cruising yacht club of Australia of Sydney to compete in the 1962 Sydney to Hobart yacht race. At some time after 1963, MISTRAL returned to ownership in Tasmania. Eventually her advancing years caught up with her and it was time for a full restoration or end her days. Fortunately for MISTRAL a caring owner found her and embarked on complete rebuild. (At this point CWB would like to acknowledge the fine work of the Wilsons Boat Yard on progressing the restoration of MISTRAL III) Apon her arrival into Cygnet Wooden Boats shipwrights Jeremy and Peter made a thorough survey of the boat and discovered that the original Tasmanian Bluegum stem and horn timbers had significant cracks and needed to be replaced. Further investigation revealed that parts of the damaged timbers had been replaced and the horn timber had also been crossed bolted in an attempt to keep the water out. The decision was made to replace the stem and horn timbers with laminated Huon Pine, never an easy job even for an experienced Shipwright. As you can see from the following photos, with Peter leading the team, MISTRAL'S new timbers are in place with the appropriate new supporting floors are now in place. With MISTRAL III'S backbone now repaired to team has commenced the completion of the new deck! Big thanks to Pete Paxton, Mark Adams and the Wilson Yard for the current pictures. Also thanks to Suzanna Rex and Nicole Mays for the historic photos of MISTRAL III.

TE UIRA UPDATE NO 28. After the madness of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart Tasmania, life is slowly returning to some sort of normality! Now TE UIRA has been returned to the briny we have a waterline and other data to ensure that she floats as intended when she was first launched in 1896. It was the normal practice of the early boat builders to sneak a quiet launch away from the public's eye to make sure that come launch day the new boat floated perfectly on her marks. With TE UIRA'S original lead ballast being lost to WW2 and most of Charles Bailey Jun's early racing yacht plans also being lost in a catastrophic fire at the Bailey's yard, we only had an approximate weight of the keel and a description from the newspapers of the time. The newspaper description of the ballast was, " A bulb keel, almost triangular in shape". Other articles on TE UIRA mentioned a ballast weight of between 4.5 and 5 tons, although we suspected that the true weight would be kept secret by builders. It was no surprise that Jeremy's and Matts calculation for the ballast were almost perfect at 4.3 tons with only 350kg needing to be removed to allow for the mast and rig weight forward of amidships. With the knowledge learnt from floating the boat it was time to take her out of the water again, this time at Oyster Cove at Kettering and complete the fairing of the hull and the final spray painting of the hull by our team with Jonathan Minnebow Design spraying the topsides. With the topsides finish the team re-masked the topsides to add the boot top and gilded cove line. Next job was to refit the chain plates complete with their internal bronze plates to connect the deck to the hull. With UIRA'S new complex motor and drive system now running perfectly it was time to complete and fit the cockpit then add curved teak seats. While the team was busy with the topsides and deck Shipwright Pete was below decks making beautiful trim work for the skylight and hatches and the companionway. Meanwhile also below decks Shipwright Mark was busy constructing and fitting a snug chain locker up forward in a very very tight spot! With all this work now completed, over the coming winter the team and will be mast and spar building and come the spring UIRA'S rig should be ready for fitting! I'll let the pictures do the talking from here!
